Teaching & Supervision
Research Supervision · Regional Development · Amazonia · Mining · Public Policy · Society–Nature Relations
My teaching and supervision are closely connected to my research on regional development, Amazonia, resource extraction, public policy, society–nature relations and the development of the research programme Regional Development in World Society (RWS).
Over the course of my academic work, I have supervised research at doctoral, master’s and other postgraduate levels on a broad range of questions concerning regional development, mining and extractive economies, public policy, environmental governance, communities, organizations and institutional change.
Supervision is not limited to work explicitly based on RWS. Many earlier and current supervised studies address empirical and conceptual problems that are relevant to the programme today and contribute to its broader research genealogy.

Supervision and Regional Development in World Society
Supervised research constitutes an important empirical and conceptual environment for the further development of Regional Development in World Society (RWS).
Some supervised research addresses questions that are particularly relevant to current RWS research: the regional consequences of mining, the role of organizations in selectively processing public policies and societal expectations, the processing of conflicts through courts and administrative agencies, differentiated institutional capacities, and the interaction between ecological conditions and societal structures.
Earlier supervisions preceded the formulation of RWS as a specific theoretical programme. They should therefore not be understood retrospectively as applications of RWS. Instead, they form part of a broader research genealogy through which recurring problems of regional development, organization, governance, inequality and material transformation became increasingly interconnected.
Current and future supervision activities provide opportunities to examine these questions comparatively and, where theoretically appropriate, to test and further develop concepts such as selective territorialization, regionalization, organizations and regional structures, materiality, and regional capacities and asymmetries.
