Theoretical Building Blocks

This section brings together theoretical concepts that provide important foundations for Regional Development in World Society (RWS).
Unlike the RWS Core Concepts, these concepts are not specific theoretical inventions of RWS. They derive primarily from social systems theory and related theoretical traditions and are used to clarify the conceptual foundations on which the RWS framework builds.
The notes presented here reconstruct these concepts selectively from the perspective of their relevance for regional development.
World Society
The societal horizon within which communication, organizations and functionally differentiated processes operate beyond territorial boundaries.
Functional Differentiation
The differentiation of modern society into functionally specialized domains such as economy, politics, law and science.
Organizations
Organizations as decision-making systems that selectively process societal expectations and stabilize decision structures.
Observation & Communication
How distinctions, observations and communication shape what becomes visible, relevant and socially consequential.
Decision-Making
How organizations select among alternatives and create premises for subsequent decisions under conditions of uncertainty.
Expectations
How cognitive and normative expectations structure communication, decisions and orientations toward possible futures.
Time & Future Expectations
How historically accumulated structures and future-oriented expectations interact through present decisions.
Institutionalization
How expectations, rules, procedures and recurring arrangements acquire durability beyond individual decisions and projects.
Infrastructure
How material, technological, informational and organizational arrangements enable, channel and constrain recurrent societal processes.
Materiality & Atmosphere
An exploratory theoretical extension examining mobile, diffuse and transboundary material processes that may exceed clear territorial boundaries.
Materiality is canonical within RWS; Atmosphere remains exploratory.
Relation to RWS
These theoretical building blocks provide conceptual resources for the analysis developed within Regional Development in World Society.
They support the RWS Core Concepts without being identical to them.
In particular:
- World Society and Functional Differentiation provide the broader theory of modern society.
- Organizations, Observation, Decision-Making and Expectations specify how societal processes are selectively observed and processed.
- Time and Institutionalization clarify historical accumulation, future orientation and stabilization.
- Infrastructure and Materiality connect societal processes to differentiated physical and technological conditions.
Together, these concepts provide a theoretical foundation for analysing how world-societal processes become selectively territorialized, regionalized, organizationally stabilized, materially conditioned and institutionally condensed.
